Introducing our Pastoral Manager: Ms. Jessica Hedlund

An Interview with Pastoral Manager, Ms. Jessica Hedlund. As Pastoral manager at IES Vasteras she leads and develops the student care department at school. Ms. Hedlund is a part of the management team and collaborates with the team to drive the school forward promoting students' well-being, health and study results.

How long have you been a Pastoral Manager?

I have had the honor of being Pastoral manager for 3 years. I have also been Acting Assistant Principal for 1.5 years and have been at the school for 10 year total in August this year! 

 

Why are you a Pastoral Manager?

I want to be a part of impacting the future for our students by having a leading function at our school.

 

What role do you play in implementing the school’s behavior policy?  

I work closely with the Head of Year's, the Head of Student Development team and the Assistant Principals. The behaviour policy is always a work in progress and it takes teamwork. 

 

What is your goal as our Pastoral Manager at IES Västerås?

My goal is to make this school a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and become their best selves in an environment that feels safe, supportive, and filled with understanding and care.

 

How do you ensure students feel safe and included at school?  

I make sure that the students feel safe by being there for them and creating safe spaces for them to share their experiences.

 

What role does the pastoral team play in academic support?

Pastoral and academic goes hand in hand. To be able to perform, you need as good conditions as possible. Social and emotional support and adaptation is sometimes needed to succeed academically.

 

What does a typical day in your role look like? 

Many meetings, with staff, students and guardians. But also outside of school, I work a lot together with Social Services, the police and with different professions within Västerås stad. But being around the students is what I love doing as much as possible.

 

What do you enjoy about being a Pastoral Manager ? Everything! But the best part is when students light up as they share something they've achieved, experienced, or done, whether it's at school or elsewhere.
