IES Huddinge in the 2023 RoboCup Junior Competition Sweden

On Saturday 1 April, IES Huddinge sent two teams to compete at the 2023 RoboCup Junior Competition Sweden at Linköping University. Nine students in total proudly represented IES Huddinge in a day filled with coding, robot building and learning.

Both teams competed in The Rescue Line. In this contest, an autonomous robot follows a black line across a multi-level maze connected with ramps. Teams advancing from the tournament in Linköping will represent Sweden at the European Championship held this summer in Croatia.

The Robot Club at IES Huddinge began working together in January. Together in the Technology Lab, they worked hard to learn how to build and operate simple robots so that they could participate in the tournament. This is the first year that IES Huddinge has participated in the RoboCup Junior Competition and they are the only IES and grundskola from the Stockholm region participating in the tournament this year.

When asked what she enjoyed most about being part of the team, student Rana said, “focusing on a challenging problem and working together as a team to find a solution.” Students Zainab and Linus agreed that working together on complex problems was their favourite part of the whole project. When asked to share her thoughts, student Elsa said, “It was very cool to see different people with different ideas about how to start to build a robot. It has given me a new perspective on how to build a robot. This was our first year and we have learned so much about how it all works.”

IES Huddinge has embarked on an exciting journey to become a school of opportunity for young people living in and around Huddinge. As part of this project, the principal, Mr. Ljungberg has inaugurated the school’s first Technology Department. Along with projects focused on meeting the standards set out in LGR 22, the Technology Department is also working to engage students in hands-on practical opportunities to deepen their understanding of and engagement with the subject.

In addition to the Robotics Club, students from IES Huddinge also spent a day coding with Mälardalens Tekniska Gymnasium and will soon participate in a competition sponsored by the organisation Rising Coders focused on writing and developing interactive stories brought to life by Scratch. According to Mr. Padilla, the Head of Department for Technology, “...we focused our attention this year on finding as many practical opportunities as possible for students to apply analytical thinking and engage with technology in a way that allows them to more fully participate in the world around them.”
