Flying Free: Birds Know No Borders. An International eTwinning Project at IES Karlstad

During the 2025–2026 academic year, students at Internationella Engelska Skolan Karlstad participated in the eTwinning project Flying Free: Birds Know No Borders, alongside partner schools from Spain, France, and Greece.

The project used birds and migration as a starting point to explore themes such as biodiversity, environmental awareness, cultural exchange, and global migration. Through a variety of collaborative activities, students worked together with peers from Spain, Greece, and France while developing language skills, digital competence, creativity, and intercultural understanding.

Throughout the project, students introduced themselves and their schools through online meetings, participated in a Mystery Skype challenge, and collaborated on activities related to local bird species and migration patterns. They contributed to a shared migration map, created bird-themed artwork, exchanged seasonal greetings with partner schools, and took part in discussions through the eTwinning platform.

One of the highlights of the project was the opportunity to collaborate internationally in real time. Through online meetings, quizzes, presentations, and group activities, students learned about the natural environments, traditions, and cultures of their European partners while practising communication in English.

The project also encouraged students to reflect on broader topics such as migration, environmental responsibility, and the importance of protecting biodiversity. By working together across borders, students gained a deeper understanding of how international cooperation can contribute to addressing shared challenges.

By the end of the project, students had gained new knowledge, valuable digital skills, and friendships that extended beyond their own country. The experience demonstrated how eTwinning can connect classrooms across Europe and create meaningful learning opportunities through collaboration.

IES Karlstad would like to thank all participating students, teachers, and partner schools for their enthusiasm, commitment, and contribution to the success of Flying Free: Birds Know No Borders.
