Rewarded for grit

For their extraordinary grit, courage and determination three students at IES have each received a scholarship from “Stipendiefonden till Ellinor Carlssons minne”. The trust was ordained in 2015 in honour of the memory of Ellinor Carlsson, a student at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm who never gave up and took her final exams despite her diagnosis of Sarcoma, which would eventually take her life.

For the fifth consecutive year, the EC scholarship was awarded to graduating IES students who have shown exceptional persistence and live according to Ellinor’s motto: “to never give up”. In a school environment, that phrase can often be said and shared, but to truly live by it takes a strength of will, a blend of passion and perseverance - true grit! The recipients were carefully selected by a jury consisting of Alice Teodorescu Måwe, Wendela Rang,  Alexander Tingström and Ellinor Carlssons father Magnus Carlsson.

Two highschool students, Christelle Bastory and Disha Mathur, at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm (IEGS) and one middle school student, Ellinor Wandel, at Internationella Engelska Skolan Årsta, received the EC scholarships this year. Mr Carlsson attended both graduation ceremonies and personally awarded the scholarships to these young individuals, our IES-students.

At the IEGS Virtual Graduation Ceremony on June 2nd, Mr. Carlsson spoke about Christelle Bastory’s grit in his address to the Graduating Class of 2020. He expressed the following of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme recipient:

"The winner from the IB-classes is a true fighter in every sense of the word. Once a student in Aleppo, whose life suddenly and totally changed with the war. Despite significant obstacles Christelle put her education at her centre and continued to go to school despite the threats that war brings including bombing and shooting, despite the fact that she was never sure to get back home alive. Coming to Sweden, she had to start her education over again. Here is a student who fully understands the power of a good education and the opportunities it brings. A student that spreads joy to those around her everyday, and works incredibly hard to reach her own goals. And who has experienced the miracle a Christmas song can bring, hiding under a table while being under attack during a war."

For Disha Mathur, Mr. Carlsson spoke of her determination as a learner in the Natural Science (specialisation Social Sciences) National Programme:

“This is a student who, like Ellinor, knows that a hospital bed, even with the worst timing ever, is no excuse for giving up your dream. This winner likes saying “everything happens for a reason”, and she chose to see that period of her life as an obstacle she had to overcome to get to a bright future. Not even in the darkest moments did she give up or complain.”

On June 10th, at the IES Åsta Graduation Ceremony for Ellinor Wandel Mr. Carlsson concluded:

"When a young teenager, who in the face of adversity can inspire her teachers and classmates to be proactive and find ways to achieve personal goals, it is hard not to be impressed and moved. Ellinor Wandel has an unwavering belief that if you want to achieve something, you must find a way, even if the path is neither straight nor easy.

Thank you, Ellinor Wandel, for what you have been teaching your teachers and peers during the years here at IES Årsta. And thank you for what you are teaching me here today!"
