A welcome focus on student health

Internationella Engelska Skolan is in favour of the Government’s inquiry into how student health in Sweden can be improved further. Above all, the focus must be on the student health task and how it can be improved, and not start by moving responsibility for it away from the students.

Internationella Engelska Skolan welcomes the Government's decision to appoint an inquiry to examine how student health in Sweden can be improved further. Good student health is a prerequisite for their learning and development. That’s why nothing is more important than the well-being of our children and young people. In this regard, a holistic view of the student permeates the work of our student health staff and school teachers alike. This requires close collaboration and daily contact between all staff.

“We welcome the fact that politicians are clearly upgrading student health and want to develop the care mandate. This is prudent and consistent with what those of us who work in student health ask for on a daily basis, which is also why we want to continue to develop the work in this area,” says Dr. Helena Lüning, head of operations for student health at Internationella Engelska Skolan.

At IES we know that student health is essential to proper schooling. That’s why all of our 46 schools have a well-developed student health team including doctors, school nurses, counsellors and school psychologists. The purpose of student health at IES is to promote students’ learning, development and health and prevent poor health.

The student health team has both a preventative and a responsive role which includes medical, psychological, psychosocial and special education aspects. Student health staff collaborate with other school staff and also with external parties such as Social services. The student health teams in the individual schools work alongside students and get to know them, which is essential for successfully protecting the well-being of the students and preventing poor health.

“There are significant risks associated with placing student health outside the mandate of the school,” says Dr. Helena Lüning, head of operations for student health at Internationella Engelska Skolan.
