IES has a history to be proud of

When Barbara Bergström appears on SVT’s talkshow Carina Bergfeldt, it’s a moment for IES to be proud of its history and the ethos we’ve been honoring for almost three decades. The show will be available to watch on SVT1 from 9 pm or via SVT Play.

Barbara Bergström and Anna Sörelius Nordenborg

This week, IES’ founder Barbara Bergström was a guest on Sweden's biggest talkshow, Carina Bergfeldt on SVT. She told the inspirational and fascinating story of how she moved to Sweden from the US in 1968 and started to work as a teacher; and what she saw needed improving in Swedish schools at the time. How she founded her own school in the early 1990s, a school where students were encouraged to have high academic expectations and taught to command the English language. It was a school with a focus on a calm learning environment, not least through the never-ending work to prevent bullying.

Almost 30 years later, as CEO of Internationella Engelska Skolan, I am proud of our history and heritage. We continue to carry the ethos of Barbara Bergström into the future, throughout our 46 IES schools, from Trelleborg in the south to Skellefteå in the north. Today IES offers Swedish schools with an international profile, where we prepare students for the world through command of the English language. We have high academic aspirations and expectations and we believe in encouraging grit to overcome obstacles. Thanks to the ethos of our founder, IES schools continue to deliver strong results, and we have a history to be proud of.
