Too much screen time behind decline in reading among children

Too much screen time is one of the factors behind poorer literacy skills. To ban mobile phones in schools is a start, but schools also need to encourage reading.

Subject facilitator for Swedish, Malin Riise at IES Borås, writes in Göteborgs-Posten about the decline in reading skills among the young.

"To reverse the current trend, teachers need to be allowed to be teachers, and time must be freed up for the teacher to create the necessary relationships to reach each individual. Only then can we motivate and challenge students where they are, and give them the key to language and the world that reading constitutes."
