We are building Gothenburg's newest and most modern school

“A new chapter in the international history of Gothenburg starts today” said Anna Sörelius Nordenborg, CEO of IES, as she put her shovel in the ground to mark the construction of IES Södra Änggården.

“The weather isn’t the only reason why Gothenburg is called Little London.” She added during the ground-breaking ceremony, and referred to the city's long relationship with lands to the west.

A number of representatives from Internationella Engelska Skolan took part in the event, including principal Desiree Ekendal and students from IES Krokslätt who are looking forward to moving into the school next fall. They had gathered together with representatives from the property owner Platzer, including CEO Johanna Hult Rentsch, and invited guests to celebrate the new school building.

“The English language has a long history in the area, via merchants and shipowners, and later engineers and industrialists.” Said Anna Sörelius Nordenborg. “Gothenburg is and has always been a city where people of different nationalities, cultures and languages have met, worked and created together. A city of commerce, ingenuity, entrepreneurship and adventure.

IES Södra Änggården

“Internationella Engelska Skolan's activities in Gothenburg fit into this long and proud history. While Gothenburg celebrates its 400th anniversary, IES celebrates 30 years.”

Construction of the school is already in full swing, so the ground-breaking ceremony was symbolic. The school building will be spectacular, with a large area on the roof providing space for activities, play and socialising. The school building will be environmentally certified and will connect the city with the nearby nature of Änggårdsbergen, right next door. Built carefully in the terrain to meet a variety of ground levels, the school’s proximity to nature will encourage play and the joy of discovery.

Internationella Engelska Skolan has existed in Gothenburg since 2010, when IES Krokslätt opened its doors for the first time. Three years later, IES Johanneberg followed. Now that IES Krokslätt is moving into fantastic new premises in Södra Änggården, a new chapter is being written in the history of Internationella Engelska Skolan in Gothenburg. It will be a three-campus school for 900 students, including Fritids.

“We know that there is a great demand for schools with our profile among families all over Gothenburg. Students commute to our two schools from all over the city. The reason is the profile that has remained consistent ever since IES was founded 30 years ago.” Ms Sörelius Nordenborg added.

The school, which will be ready in 2024, will be the first building in the brand new Södra Änggården district. IES Krokslätt will move into the new district and change its name to IES Södra Änggården. The newly built school will be ready to welcome students in grades F-7 in August 2024 to have grown to an F-9 school by 2026.
