IES Östersund – A School in Östersund with a Focus on Bilingualism

Welcome to Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) Östersund — a school in Östersund that offers high-quality bilingual education for students in grades F–9.

Here, the Swedish curriculum is combined with lectures in Swedish and English, giving your child the best foundation for future studies and success in a globalized world.

At IES Sundbyberg, we use the CLIL approach (Content and Language Integrated Learning), which means that students develop their English skills in a natural way while learning subjects such as science or social studies. This helps them become confident in a bilingual environment and strengthens both subject knowledge and language development.

NEWS

What's going on at our school?

Previous

"'I appreciate that many of the teachers enjoy teaching us, and how they are interested in the subjects they are working with. It makes it easier as a student to put in a big effort: when you feel that dedication comes from both teachers and students'."

Year 8 student

"I can't give feedback about just one teacher because every teacher is really good. I would say that every teacher that I have right now is really great and we learn so much from them and I like being in the lessons when they teach"

Year 6 student

"De lär eleven mycket och eleven lär sig mycket under lektionen. The teachers teach the student a lot and the student learn a lot during the lessons. "

Year 7 Student

"'Alla lärare för ni gör ett bra jobb och att ni är snälla, lyssnar på oss barn och är glada det är svårt och säga att nån är bäst men för alla jag har lektion med passar mig bra.'"

Year 4 Student

"The students are challenged to work hard to reach their full potential and they are also offered study sessions after the school day to catch up on work. I can follow my child’s progress via updates on SchoolSoft which is great for my parental control. The school also works against bullying and takes action directly which feels safe. I also love the fact that we don’t have any discussions about ripped jeans at home anymore - due to the dress code in school. It is also great that there are no mobile phones during lessons!"

Mariann Digby - Parent of student in Y6

"For us, starting at IES has been an amazing experience. Our child is suddenly eager to go to school, takes responsibility for homework and has an easier time making friends and learning thanks to the calm environment in the classroom. Students are treated with respect and the lessons seem to trigger curiosity and the realization that it’s cool to know stuff."

Anna Rex - Parent of Year 4 student

"Education is very important to me so I really like coming to learn here. "

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Find the answer to your question

Apply to IES Östersund in just a few simple steps:

  • First click the  ‘Join the Queue’ link on our page.
  • Next select the school that you would like to apply for- (Every school has its own unique queue. You can place your child in the queue from 1st February the year after they have turned one years old).
  • Finally fill in the application form, including your details as guardians and those of your child. This means that we are able to stay in touch with you and let you know when a place becomes available.
  • It is important to note that if you have a child who is already attending our school, please make sure to enter the sibling’s Swedish social security number. This will then give your child priority in the queue, if there is space available in the school.
  • If you have single custody over your child, it is good to prepare evidence/ a certificate from Skatteverket.

Sadly, our school is not an open space and we do not allow people to look around the school without contacting a member of staff first and having their approval.  It is crucial that we know exactly who is in the school building and for what reason due to safeguarding. If people turn up to the school as they please, then teaching can be disrupted and we are unable to keep our students safe. We suggest that you attend our Open House evenings and parent meetings to have the opportunity to look around the school.

Although, we do have a digital tour of the school that you can watch to become familiar with the school site and school life. You can click here to watch the Digital Tour via our website or click here to watch the video on YouTube. You should also follow our social media channels to keep up to date with what is going on at the school.

We understand that you would like to know as early as possible whether your child has a place. Unfortunately, we are unable to share the queue number with students or parents as it is difficult to give a precise answer before the school completes its intake process.  We offer places based on the date on which students joined the queue, but also consider whether they will have a sibling in the school at the same time (syskonförtur). If a spot does open up and you are next in line, we will contact you as soon as possible to offer you a place.

Students are encouraged to come to school and be prepared for all of their classes.  All students are given an Internationella Engelska Skolan branded backpack and pencil case - these should be clearly named and looked after to ensure that they can be used throughout their time at IES. Students will be provided with basic stationery at school but if students wish to come with their own, they can.

All students are given a fruit snack and a school lunch every day and we have a no additional food on school site policy.  All students are encouraged to bring a clearly named water bottle to school with them. Fritids students can eat breakfast and mellis every day (contact Fritids for more information.) If your child has additional dietary requirements contact the school nurse.

On days that students have PE, they should bring appropriate clothing with them.

F-5 students are expected to go outside during their break times and it is therefore very important that students have suitable outdoor clothing with them.  All outdoor clothing should be clearly named.
