At IES Karlstad, student care is central to our mission, as we believe academic success is closely linked to social and emotional well-being. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.
Our student care focuses on health promotion and prevention, helping students grow socially, emotionally, and academically. We follow a "Tough Love" approach, combining high expectations, clear structures, and discipline with compassion and support to guide students to success.
The Student Care Team (SCT) oversees and implements our student care program, with all members also serving on the anti-bullying team. The SCT includes:
- Principal and Assistant Principals
- Student Care Manager: Oversees the Student Care Team’s work and focus on disciplinary issues for the whole school
- Career Counsellor: Offers guidance to our students on their career- and high school choices.
- School Nurses: One for Junior School (years 4-6) and one for Senior School (years 7-9), providing preventative care and addressing immediate health concerns.
- School Counsellors: One for Junior School (years 4-6) and one for Senior School (years 7-9), offering emotional and mental health support.
- Pedagogical Facilitators: Supporting students’ social development and helping build healthy relationships.
- Special Education Units: Separate units for Junior and Senior Schools provide targeted support for students with additional needs.
Our proactive student care approach includes several initiatives:
- Buddies in Every Class: Two peer supporters per class work with facilitators and counsellors to maintain a positive, safe atmosphere and contribute to anti-harassment efforts.
- Field Group and Youth Police: Regular visits from the "Fältgrupp" and Youth Police help address broader social issues and ensure student safety.
- Educational Lectures and Peer-led Follow-ups: The School Psychologist offers lectures on social media, stress, and discrimination, with follow-up lessons delivered by older students to younger peers through the Buddies Prefect Program.
- Partnerships with External Organizations: We collaborate with groups like Druvan, Tobaksbarn, and Tjejjouren to cover key topics on youth well-being.
- Mentor Support: Mentors maintain monthly contact with guardians to monitor academic and social progress, ensuring collaboration between school and home.
At IES Karlstad, we are dedicated to helping every student feel safe, valued, and prepared to reach their full potential through our comprehensive student care program.
