At IES Karlstad, we understand the crucial role nutrition plays in supporting a student’s academic success and overall well-being. Our founder, Ms. Barbara Bergström, has long emphasized the importance of healthy food in an educational environment. We are proud to continue this tradition by offering high-quality meals that contribute to both the physical and mental growth of our students.

Our Dining Experience
Lunch at IES Karlstad is a vital part of the school day. We strive to create a relaxing, enjoyable dining atmosphere where students can socialize and recharge for the rest of the day. Every meal features a variety of options, including a daily vegetarian dish, and a salad buffet with crispbread. For drinks, students can choose between fresh water and milk, ensuring they have access to nutritious beverages.

Our Vision for the Dining Hall
We believe that mealtime should be both nourishing and social. To create a positive and welcoming environment, our teachers join students at the lunch tables every day, fostering an inclusive and respectful atmosphere. This encourages a sense of community and helps students develop healthy social habits during meals.

The Food Council: Student Voices Matter
To ensure that our dining hall meets the needs and preferences of our students, IES Karlstad has a dedicated Food Council. This council meets each term and consists of students from every year group, along with the school nurse, kitchen staff, and the principal. The council provides valuable feedback and suggestions, helping us continuously improve our meals and dining experience.

Dietary Requirements
For students with specific dietary needs due to medical reasons, such as allergies, we offer personalized meal options. Parents should provide a doctor or dietician’s certificate to the school nurse to ensure the appropriate dietary accommodations are made.

Dining Hall Routines
To maintain a calm and organized environment, we have clear routines in place:

  • Queuing: Students should arrive at the dining hall at their assigned time and line up calmly, with teachers allowing small groups of 5-6 students to enter at a time.
  • Respect for the Space: After enjoying their meal, students are expected to leave the tables and chairs as they found them, cleaning away any food scraps to keep the space tidy.
  • Polite Social Interaction: We encourage respectful and polite communication during lunch. Simple gestures like offering to refill a friend’s water or thanking the kitchen staff for the food create a warm and respectful dining culture.
