Student Voice in Action: How Students and Staff Work Together at IES Landskrona

At Internationella Engelska Skolan, creating a safe, calm, and inspiring learning environment is a joint effort. We firmly believe that when students have a seat at the table, they take pride in their school community. Our active Student Council (Elevråd) is a cornerstone of this philosophy, giving students a clear platform to share their ideas, address challenges, and work directly with school leadership to make a meaningful impact.

Celebrating What Works

Feedback from our recent student surveys and Student Council meetings shows a strong sense of well-being across the year groups. Students continuously highlight that they feel safe and enjoy the company of their classmates. Highlights from student feedback include:

  • The Library as a Sanctuary: Students across year groups praised the school library as a quiet, safe, and supportive space for both focused study and relaxation.

  • Effective Classroom Routines: Teachers’ calm-down signals and clear routines are widely appreciated by students for maintaining focus during lessons.

  • School Spirit: Excitement is building as the Student Council organizes a whole-school "Dress-up Day," where students and staff vote on fun themes like Sports Day or Role Reversal Day to foster school spirit across all year groups.

Dialogue, Problem-Solving, and Shared Responsibility

Student democracy at IES is about more than just making a wish list, it is about constructive dialogue and active participation. When students bring proposals to school leadership, we work through them together to see what is possible, what requires creative solutions, and how students can take ownership of the outcomes.

Here is how that dialogue works in practice:

  • Creating Spaces for Recreation: Following student requests for additional recess equipment like table tennis, school leadership and the Student Council are co-creating guidelines. Students are taking the lead in designing a booking system and setting expectations for equipment care to ensure everyone gets a turn in a respectful environment.

  • Enhancing Classroom Focus: In response to requests for improved study quietness (studiero), the school is looking into practical additions such as noise-canceling headphones, subtle window coverings, and active focus tools to support different learning styles.

  • Fostering Community Across Year Groups: Older students in Year 9 are stepping up as leaders by collaborating with staff to organize school-wide sports tournaments, including basketball and volleyball matches, as well as the traditional, friendly "Teachers vs. Students" game.

  • Maintaining a Respectful Campus: When discussing school environment topics, such as keeping shared facilities clean or managing shared equipment, we emphasize mutual responsibility. Staff ensure daily upkeep and supervision, while encouraging students to take personal pride in keeping their environment welcoming for everyone.

By involving students in both the ideas and the practical solutions, we help them develop a sense of ownership, accountability, and pride in their school environment.

We look forward to seeing our Student Council continue their great work throughout the academic year!
