Gymnasium Choice Tips from IES Landskrona Career Guidance

Making a gymnasium choice is a significant milestone for students in Year 9. Our SYV at IES Landskrona, shares essential dates and expert advice to help families navigate this transition with confidence.

Choosing a gymnasium is about more than just a school; it is about finding an environment where a student can thrive and take their next steps toward higher education or a global labour market. At IES Landskrona, our academic and pastoral teams work together to support students through this high-pressure period.

Key Dates for Gymnasium Choice
To help guardians and students stay on track, please keep these three milestones on your radar:

  • 15 January – 15 February: The initial application period. This is when students submit their first choices based on their autumn term grades.

  • 15 April: Preliminary admission results are released. This allows students to see how their merit value compares to others applying for the same programmes.

  • 25 April – 15 May: The re-selection period. Students can adjust their applications before the final results are published on 1 July.

Focusing on the Journey
Many students feel the pressure of making a "final" life decision. We encourage them to see this as a choice for the next three years rather than the rest of their lives. It is important to remember that there are always opportunities to add courses later through adult education (Komvux) if needed. The primary goal is achieving a gymnasium diploma, which opens doors to future success.

Advice for Guardians
Motivation in Year 8 and 9 often comes from having a clear goal. We recommend that families attend open houses and participate in "shadowing" opportunities at prospective schools early on. This helps students find a school they truly love, which provides the grit and perseverance needed to work hard for their required merit points.

At IES, we believe that every student is everyone’s student. By staying involved and helping your child organise their calendar for national tests and study sessions, we can ensure they reach their full potential together.
