Creative Country Projects and Treats: Year 5 Celebrates UN Day!
To mark UN Day, our Year 5 students got a hands-on taste of global politics and diplomacy. After learning about what the United Nations does, they created their very own brand-new member countries and presented them to each other—and finished off the day with a well-deserved treat!
Building a Country from Scratch
During the project, students dove into what the UN actually does around the world. Then, it was time to put their new knowledge into action by working in groups to invent their own new member states.
Using grains of rice to trace out unique map shapes, the teams brought their imaginary geography to life. From there, they decided on all the key details that make a country complete:
-
Country name and capital city
-
Languages spoken and fun cultural facts
-
Important facts about the country's geography and society
Presenting to the "UN Assembly"
Once their nations were fully built, the students stepped into the shoes of global ambassadors. Each group presented their new member state to the rest of the class, just like a real UN meeting welcoming new member nations.
To top off their fantastic teamwork, creativity, and learning, everyone got to celebrate with delicious sundaes!
