Student Voice & Action: How the IES Västerås Student Council Works
At IES Västerås, we believe that the best way to improve our school is to listen to the people who know it best: our students. Our Student Council (SC) serves as the formal bridge between the student body and school leadership.

At IES Västerås, we believe that the best way to improve our school is to listen to the people who know it best: our students. Our Student Council (SC) serves as the formal bridge between the student body and school leadership.
🏛️ Our Structure & Process
The council is a democratic hub led by our School Administrator, Ms. Hedström, and our Principal, Ms. Sembrant.
-
Representation: Every class elects two representatives to join the council.
-
Monthly Meetings: Representatives meet once a month to discuss school-wide issues, from facilities to food.
-
The Feedback Loop: After each meeting, representatives share notes with their classmates during Mentor Time. They then gather thoughts and suggestions to bring back to the next council session, ensuring every student has a seat at the table.
-
Student Leadership: This year, the council is presided over by Veronika (9D). As President, Veronika facilitates discussions and empowers her peers to take an active role in school governance.
🥗 Latest Updates: School Lunch Collaboration & Safety
Our most recent meeting was a fantastic example of students and staff working together to solve problems:
-
The "Food Council" Initiative: Following a student request for hamburgers on "Free Choice" days, Ms. Sembrant is launching a new Food Council. Two students from Years 4, 5, and 6 will soon join our kitchen team behind the scenes to learn exactly what it takes to feed 500 people every day!
-
Safety "Eyes and Ears": Our Student Care Manager in safety and risk prevention, Mr. Lehtonen, has called on council members to be the "eyes and ears" of the school. Students are encouraged to identify unsafe areas and speak with him directly to ensure everyone feels secure.
-
Preparedness Drills: Ms. Sembrant briefed the council on upcoming lockdown and evacuation exercises. To ensure everyone can practice these procedures calmly, dates and times will be announced in advance.
📱 Get Involved!
Do you have a creative idea for the school’s social media? Ms. Hedlund is looking for students to suggest fun activities or content to share on our official pages. If you have a vision for a project, reach out to her directly!
"Being President has been a transformative journey. It has helped me grow into a confident public speaker, and I value the trust my peers have placed in me." — Veronika (9D), Student Council President
