The Expandia Arena recently transformed into a massive chess theater to host the annual Schackfyran tournament. This year’s regional qualifier was a high-stakes event, featuring 17 competing schools and a leaderboard so tight that several rankings were separated by a razor-thin margin of just one point.

While our Grade 4 classes fought hard on the boards, they stood out even more for their conduct off them. Although they didn't clinch the tournament title this time, IES Västerås is proud to have presented two special school-level awards to our students.

Our dedicated chess organizer, Ms. Lempeä, felt these two classes truly embodied the values of our school:

  • The Excellence in Conduct Award: Presented by the school to Class 4A for maintaining exemplary behavior and focus throughout the high-pressure matches.

  • The Class Spirit Trophy: Awarded to Class 4B, whose students were the heart of the arena, enthusiastically cheering on every classmate returning from a game.

"While the scoreboard tracks the moves, it doesn't always show the character," says Ms. Lempeä. "I was so moved by the kindness and energy of our students that we had to recognize these achievements officially."

Congratulations to all our Grade 4 students for demonstrating true sportsmanship. A heartfelt thank you goes to Ms. Lempeä for the immense heart and soul she pours into our chess club and for ensuring our students' efforts never go unnoticed.
