IES Tyresö Autumn Term Kick Off Outdoors
Students and staff at IES Tyresö launched the new academic year with a collaborative outdoor hike for years 4–9.
Starting the term with shared adventure, students stepped outside classroom walls to build trust, connection, and resilience across all year groups.
The full-day excursion combined physical activity with interactive team challenges through local forest trails. Students from years 4 to 9 collaborated in mixed groups, tackling hands-on tasks designed to foster communication, problem-solving, and mutual support. From balancing across wooden beams and tackling climbing ropes to constructing detailed natural artwork out of sticks and leaves, every activity encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones together.
This annual tradition reflects the core of the IES model, which balances strong academics with dedicated pastoral care. At Internationella Engelska Skolan, high-quality learning depends on a safe, calm, and supportive school environment where adults take responsibility for every student. By extending learning beyond the classroom, staff help students establish trust in their peers and teachers early, building a positive school culture grounded in respect and safety.
Working through outdoor challenges also puts the concept of grit directly into practice. Experiencing physical effort and creative problem-solving helps students develop perseverance and confidence, setting a strong foundation for academic success throughout the coming year.
"Seeing students from different year groups encourage each other on the trail really sets the tone for our whole school culture," said one IES Tyresö educator. "When students tackle physical challenges together in nature, they learn that achieving any goal—whether scaling a climbing rope or mastering a difficult subject—requires patience, effort, and grit."
"It was so fun to spend the day outside making things and working through the obstacles together," shared a year 6 student. "Helping each other stay balanced on the logs made it really easy to talk to new people and feel like part of the school right away."
By nurturing a strong, supportive environment inside and outside the classroom, IES Tyresö ensures every student is prepared to meet high academic expectations and thrive.
