Meet Ms Heunis, our librarian!

My name is Ms Heunis, guardian of the books, keeper of the stories… By day, I’m the school librarian… by night, still the librarian—tracking down overdue books and uncovering the best reads out there.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in sunny South Africa where the lions roar, the sun shines bright, and every sunset looks like a painting.

How long have you been in Sweden?
I’ve been living in Sweden for just over five years—plenty of time to fall in love with cinnamon buns, layers of winter clothing, and midsummer magic!

Where have you lived and worked before?
Before landing in Sweden, my story took me from the wild beauty of South Africa to the golden deserts of Oman where I lived and worked for eight years — two very different chapters, each full of sunshine, stories, and adventure.

How many books have you read?
I’m not sure exactly how many… but including my childhood reads, I’ve probably lived a hundred lifetimes in story worlds. And now I get to share that magic with everyone at school!

What is your favourite book?
I could never pick just one favorite book—there are too many wonderful stories out there! Every book has something special, and I love them all for different reasons.

What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is meeting new faces every day and helping each person find a story that’s just right for them. I also love the peace and calm of the library—it’s a place where everyone can feel safe to read, learn, and think.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
A day in my life at work is never exactly the same. We have two libraries in our school so depending on where my day starts, I open the library at 08:15 and start by checking if any books need to be returned to the shelves. Then I might greet students, help them find the perfect book, or assist with a project. I spend time organizing the library, creating displays, and making sure it’s a welcoming space - sometimes eager student helpers assist me and share their ideas for the library with me. Some days I lead a reading session or recommend stories to curious readers. Throughout it all, I enjoy the calm of the library and the chance to connect with students and colleagues. Before I leave, I tidy up and prepare the library for another day of stories and learning.

What would you say makes your school a great school?
What makes our school great isn’t perfection—it’s the people. Our staff come every day with the goal of making a difference, we have students and colleagues from all over the world, and everyone cares about learning and growing. We may face challenges, but we always strive to do better than the year before.
