Future Politicians? Iacob and Benjamin take the "Social Studies Challenge" to the Chairman!

As part of a project to find social studies connections in daily life, Iacob and Benjamin (5A) took the initiative to go beyond the classroom. Driven by an interest in democracy, they worked with their teacher to engage directly with local political leaders and learn more about decision making in the local community.

This school year, our students have been diving into an exciting Social Studies challenge during their tutorial sessions. The goal? To track down traces of social studies, geography, history, and religion in their own daily lives and local neighborhoods.

Two students who truly took this challenge to the next level are Iacob and Benjamin from class 5A. Fueled by a passion for democracy and community issues, the students alongside their teacher, took the initiative to reach out directly to our local decision-makers.

Earlier this week, the boys headed to the Town Hall to meet with Richard Orgård, the Chairman of the Municipal Board in Österåker. During their tutorials, they had carefully prepared insightful questions about how the municipality is governed and how big decisions are actually made.

The visit included both a fascinating interview and an exclusive tour of Alcea Huset. They even got to visit the Council Chambers, the very room where local political parties gather to debate and vote on the issues that affect everyone living in Österåker.

"This is where all the parties vote on things every month," the boys reported back.

For Iacob and Benjamin, this was about more than just a school assignment. Iacob is already considering a career in politics or journalism, while Benjamin’s interest in government was sparked further after a recent visit to Stockholm City Hall.

Now, the real work begins! Iacob and Benjamin are busy compiling their notes and impressions into a presentation poster that will be displayed at school. We are all looking forward to seeing their results and learning more about how democracy functions right here in our backyard.

Fantastic work, Iacob and Benjamin! You are true role models for how to explore the world beyond the classroom.
