Strength in Community, The IES Österåker House System

At IES Österåker, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls. Discover how our vibrant House System fosters a unique sense of belonging, local pride, and character development for every student from Kindergarten to Year 9.

At IES Österåker, our House System is more than just a friendly competition; it is the heartbeat of our school culture. From the kindergarteners to our oldest students, every member of our school belongs to one of three Houses. This "vertical" grouping ensures that students of all ages interact, mentor one another, and build a lasting sense of belonging and community.

Our three houses are deeply rooted in the local heritage and landscape of the Österåker region, bringing history to life through their unique symbolism. House Tunaborgen, represented by the colour red, draws its name from the local ruins and features a castle on its shield to symbolise the virtues of patience and magnanimity. House Alcea, identified by its vibrant blue, honours the Alcea boat; its shield proudly displays a vessel representing truth and loyalty. Finally, House Vasa, wearing white, commemorates Gustav Vasa’s historical presence in our area with a crown symbol that embodies peace and serenity. Together, these shields do more than identify a team; they serve as a daily reminder of our connection to the community and the timeless values we strive to uphold. Reflecting our respect for the past and our focus on the future.

The House System isn't just for sports days; it is woven into our daily academic life. Students earn merits every day by demonstrating House P.R.I.D.E., a set of core values that prepare them for success in any future field:

Positive
Respectful
Inclusive
Dare to Excel
Engaged in Learning

Whether a student is helping a peer in the hallway or achieving a personal best in the classroom, these actions contribute to their House’s standing. The spirit of competition comes alive each term as students track the house standings, eager to see which House will be awarded the winning House Trophy. This excitement peaks during events like Track and Field Day, where the sports arena turns into a sea of red, blue, and white.

Our Houses are led by dedicated Staff House Captains and Student House Leaders. These leaders don't just cheer from the sidelines; they represent their Houses on the School Student Council, ensuring that every student has a voice in our school’s development.

We are incredibly proud of how our students contribute to our school community. At IES Österåker, you aren't just part of a class, you are part of a legacy!
