Fritids at IES Österåker

At Internationella Engelska Skolan Österåker, our fritidshem is the beating heart of our school. It is a vibrant hub where curiosity meets play, and where learning continues long after the end of the school day.

We believe that high-quality education does not live in a vacuum. Under the leadership of our fritids curriculum lead, our dedicated team work tirelessly to design creative, hands-on activities that align with the Swedish national curriculum (Lgr22). From the warm aroma of fresh baking to the quiet focus of a coding challenge, there is always something magical happening in our halls.

We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, resilience, and kindness our students display every single day. Here is a look at what our students experience in our programme:

• History & Creativity: Our Kindergarten class and Year 1 students recently took a trip back in time by recreating the world’s oldest known instrument, a 60,000-year-old Slovenian flute, using clay and colourful paints.

• Cultural Celebrations: We take great pride in celebrating our diverse world, from honouring International Sámi Day with paper-layering art to weaving yarn through heart shapes for Valentine’s Day.

• Building & Engineering Club: During "Engineering Week," our students build noodle skyscrapers and "wiggly" spaghetti towers. They learn that even the best engineers know that sometimes spaghetti breaks, and that is okay! This builds the grit and resilience needed for the future.

• Sensory Baking & Mindfulness: While younger students use playdough to practice kitchen prep, older students in Years 2–6 bake real treats. In Years 4–6, students pair baking with meditation and mindfulness to practice the art of kindness.

Our learning journey is always moving forward. During our themed months, students even have the opportunity "travel" around the world, visiting a new country each week to explore unique languages, cultures, and traditions through hands-on activities.
