Library Field Trip: Old-School Learning with a Twist

They say education is built on the “Three R’s”—Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic—even though only one of them actually starts with an “R.” (We won’t tell if you won’t.)

This week, we took our students to the public library, and you’d be surprised how alive those old-school basics still are—especially when paired with a bit of real-world excitement.

Reading? Check. Students were completely absorbed in everything from comic books to atlases to novels longer than their attention spans (just kidding—they were hooked). It was a beautiful thing to see.

Writing? Absolutely. Between scribbling titles they wanted to check out, jotting notes for future stories, and sketching ideas, it looked like half the class had transformed into authors-in-training.

Arithmetic? Oh yes, of course! The students couldn’t stop wondering how much time we had left, calculating if we could spend the remainder of the 6-hour day there and then return 1 day every 5-day week for the next 7 weeks of school. Let’s just say, mental math was alive and well.

A huge shout-out to the library staff, who were welcoming, patient, and incredibly helpful. Whether it was finding just the right book or explaining how to sign up for a library card, they made our visit run smoothly and made the students feel at home.

It turns out, you don’t need desks and whiteboards to learn the fundamentals. Sometimes all it takes is a good book, a quiet space, and a little curiosity—plus maybe a friendly librarian or two.
