At IES Nacka we work to provide a good understanding of how our world is structured and how it works.
The SO subjects give you the tools to understand the society you live in, regardless of how politics, economics and the legal system affect your everyday life. It is about understanding your rights and obligations as a citizen, and how you can get involved in creating a better society.
We see how past events, conflicts and progress give us lessons that help us understand why things look the way they do. History provides perspective and shows how people, cultures and societies have developed over time. In an increasingly globalized world, it is important to be able to understand and respect other cultures, their beliefs and ways of life. A tolerance that is self-evident in a democratic and equal society.
We also address how it is not only humans who affect the earth but also how the earth affects us. What processes have happened and are happening that show the global differences and challenges that exist depending on where on earth you are. The only earth we have, which requires that we treat nature and the people around us in a long-term sustainable way.
In a rapidly changing world, where opinions and sometimes false claims are treated as pure facts, critical thinking is required. It is not just about accepting information but about questioning sources, seeing context and forming your own opinion. This ability is crucial in a world full of information.
When you leave school in grade 9, it is our firm belief that you have been given the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to become a conscious and engaged citizen. They help you navigate a complex world and to see the connections between the past, the present and a hopefully bright future.
