Music
Welcome to the Music Department at IES Nacka!
Music at our school is more than just learning notes and rhythms. It is about creativity, collaboration, and understanding the role music plays in our world. From year 4 to year 9, we take a holistic perspective that allows students to grow from exploring the joy of music to developing advanced skills in performance, composition, and critical reflection.
Our team consists of three teachers with varied backgrounds: a classically trained pianist from Japan, a choir conductor, and a modern music specialist with a focus on recording and production from Sweden. All are active musicians as well as trained at leading universities and conservatories, bringing both professional expertise and real-world experience into the classroom.
The department is equipped with well-stocked music rooms, rehearsal spaces, and computers with MIDI keyboards for digital music creation. Smaller ensemble rooms allow students to work in bands, rehearse together, and challenge themselves both musically and socially. Students who need extra support can receive tutorials, while those who wish to go further have opportunities to rehearse and play in bands outside of regular lessons.
In the younger years, our lessons focus on the basics and the joy of making music such as singing, rhythm, and simple instrumental play. As students progress, they dive deeper into ensemble work, music theory, and digital composition. Older students also explore music’s role in society both historically and in the present, discussing inclusivity, diversity, and gender roles through the lens of music and culture.
We emphasise both individual success and teamwork. Students can shine through songwriting, instrument skills, and digital production, but they also learn the challenges and rewards of working together as an ensemble. Feedback is formative, given both orally and in writing throughout the process, so that every student can grow step by step.
Throughout the year, students take part in key musical events such as the annual Lucia choir and graduation bands. We also collaborate with the Modern Languages department for our own Eurovision-style competition, where music, culture, and creativity meet.
Our goal is that every student leaves IES Nacka with confidence, creativity, cultural awareness, and above all a lifelong love of music.
