Our Commitment to Fundamental Values (Grundläggande värden)

At our school, the Grundläggande värden—democracy, human rights, equality, and respect for each individual—are not just words in a document. They are the foundation of everything we do, guiding our teaching, our relationships, and the way we shape our school environment.

Home Economics

Hem och Konsumentkunskap is a practical and theoretical subject. We  focus on life and work in the home, family, and as a consumer. At IES Nacka we aim to provide students with essential tools to create a functional everyday life and promote sustainable development through conscious choices regarding health, economy, and the environment.

What Students Will Learn

The teaching in HKK will help students develop skills and knowledge across three main areas:

1. Food, Meals, and Health

Students will learn how to:

  • Plan and cook meals for different needs and contexts, with a focus on hygiene and food safety.

  • Understand the nutritional and energy needs of the body and how to compose varied and balanced meals.

  • Explore different food traditions and the significance of meals for social interaction.

  • Create their own recipes and develop skills in using cooking tools and technical equipment safely.

2. Consumption and Economy

This area focuses on responsible consumer choices and personal finance, teaching students about:

  • Youth personal finance, including budgeting, saving, borrowing money, and managing credit or subscriptions.

  • Consumer rights and responsibilities (e.g., warranty, complaint, right of withdrawal) when buying goods and services both in stores and online.

  • The difference between objective consumer information and the influence of advertising and media on consumption habits.

3. Environment and Lifestyle

Students will develop an ability to value actions in the home based on their impact on health, economy, and the environment, by learning about:

  • Resource management and how to conserve and make use of food and other consumables (e.g., leftovers).

  • The impact of the production, transport, and recycling of food and other goods on human health, the economy, and the environment.

  • Routines and methods for cleaning and laundry.

  • Work division in the home from an equality and gender perspective, and reflecting on cultural variations and traditions in different households.

The course emphasizes practical work where students train their initiative, creativity, and ability to solve practical situations, while reflecting on the consequences of their household choices for their well-being and shared resources.
