Result from school review
The Swedish Schools Inspectorate conducted a thematic quality review of the International English School in Kungsbacka to assess the quality of English language teaching in subjects other than languages. The focus of the review was to determine whether the teaching provides students with the opportunity to develop both subject knowledge and language skills in both Swedish and English.
The Swedish Schools Inspectorate visited the school on November 26, 2024, conducting observations of lessons and interviews with students, teachers, and the Principal. Documentation from the school and available statistics about the school's operations were also collected to ensure a thorough assessment. At the time of the review, there were 274 students in grades 7–9 receiving part of their education in English in subjects such as mathematics, natural sciences, physical education, craft, music, and home and consumer studies.
The assessment showed that the teaching at the International English School in Kungsbacka provides students with good opportunities to develop both language and subject knowledge. Based on the quality criteria used in the review, the teaching was deemed to effectively promote student learning in both Swedish and English. Teachers use authentic examples and tasks that help students understand and apply knowledge in real-world contexts. Additionally, students are encouraged to use all their linguistic resources, meaning that even those who do not speak English or Swedish as their first language can actively participate in lessons.
The Principal at the school actively works to create an environment where students are given the opportunity to develop their skills in both languages and emphasizes the importance of language development in all subjects. The Swedish Schools Inspectorate concluded that the operations in the reviewed areas were functioning well, with no deficiencies that required action. No specific development areas were identified, indicating that the school is working effectively toward its goals.
In summary, the review shows that the International English School in Kungsbacka provides high quality teaching that enables students to develop both subject knowledge and language skills effectively. The Swedish Schools Inspectorate found that both the teachers and the Principal are working purposefully to promote student learning, and that the teaching meets the quality criteria set for the review.
