Year 9 Un-Conference

UN Roleplay in Year 9 – Focus on Climate Change

Over the course of three weeks, the Year 9 students worked on an interdisciplinary project combining English, Social Studies, and Geography. The project aimed to deepen their understanding of democratic processes and provide insight into the work of the United Nations, with a particular focus on climate change.

Students were divided into groups and assigned different countries to represent. They explored how climate change affects their country – for example through extreme weather, rising sea levels, or changing living conditions – and investigated what solutions the country is working on or could propose. During the project, they compared different national perspectives, analyzed data, and created presentations in English.

By reading, discussing, and writing in English, students not only deepened their knowledge of climate issues and international cooperation but also practiced using the language in a real-world context.

The project concluded with a UN simulation, where students put their knowledge into practice by representing their countries in a roleplay. The day began with opening speeches, where each country presented its situation and proposed solutions. This was followed by negotiations between countries to reach common agreements. Throughout the day, students worked together to draft resolutions with their allies and, finally, participated in a vote – just like in real UN proceedings.

It was an inspiring and educational day, where students demonstrated great engagement, teamwork, and creativity. The project gave them a deeper understanding of global issues, democratic processes, and how cooperation between nations can be key to addressing climate change.
