ear 4 Science Class Takes Experiment Outdoors

Year 4 science students stepped outside into the nice weather to conduct a hands-on chemistry experiment using kernels, baking soda, and vinegar.

Taking advantage of the nice weather, Ms McGouran led her year 4 science class outdoors for a fun, hands-on lesson. Wearing lab coats for the occasion, the young scientists were eager to dive into their chemistry practical.

The lesson focused on observing chemical reactions through a classic demonstration known as the dancing popcorn experiment. By combining water, baking soda, and vinegar in a cup, students created a reaction that produced carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles attached themselves to the popcorn kernels, lifting them to the surface before popping and sinking back down, creating the illusion of dancing kernels.

"This is really fun and different," shared one Year 4 student during the activity.

By bringing teacher-led learning into an outdoor setting, the lesson helped students connect scientific concepts to memorable experiences, sparking curiosity and a genuine enthusiasm for knowledge.
