Tribute to the late Malian photographer Seydou Keïta
Mr. Beyene Year 7-9 Art Teacher
This term in art, our Year 9 students engaged in an in-depth study of the renowned Malian photographer Seydou Keïta, celebrated for his influential portrait work. As a culminating project, each student created a tribute to Keïta by reimagining one of his iconic portraits. They were asked to bring a personally meaningful item to incorporate into their photographs, adding a layer of personal storytelling to their work. Using a professional-grade camera system, students collaborated by photographing each other, allowing them to gain practical experience behind the lens.
The photographic equipment for this project was generously provided by the art teacher's son, and the textiles used as backdrop materials were kindly lent by Ms. Ankergård, our textiles teacher. This collaborative effort allowed students to explore photography in a professional setting, enriching their appreciation of both the technical and creative elements of portrait art.
