Year 5 students test bridge designs

Students in year five have been putting their engineering skills to the test. During technology lessons, they designed and built their own bridge structures to explore strength and stability.

At Internationella Engelska Skolan Hässelby Strand, we believe in providing a safe and calm environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves. Recently, our year five students took on a hands-on project in their technology class to apply theoretical knowledge to a practical challenge.

The project required students to use "grit" – a strong fighting spirit – as they worked through the complexities of structural engineering. By designing and building their own bridges, they learned how different shapes and materials affect the weight a structure can hold.

Key highlights from the bridge project:

Bridge structure: Students explored how different designs, such as arch or beam bridges, impact overall stability.

Practical application: The task allowed the year five groups to see how the core content of the technology syllabus works in the real world.

Testing and results: Each bridge was tested for strength, helping students understand the importance of perseverance and effort in the learning process.

This initiative reflects the IES model, where we aim to maintain the highest quality in teaching while helping every student reach their full potential.
