IES Älvsjö World Book Day celebrations

We were excited to celebrate World Book Day on Friday, April 22 at IES Älvsjö!

We had the following activities at our school:

  • Dress-up for the entire school: Students and teachers alike dressed up like their favorite character, author or any book-related theme on Friday, April 22. Prizes were awarded to "best costume" from every year group.

  • Reading Contest for years 4, 5, 6: We encouraged students to read at home. Students received a reading log from their Swedish teachers, read at least 15 minutes per day at home, and parents needed to sign the log to confirm the amount of pages. In each year group, the class with the most amount of pages read won the contest. We gave special prizes to the winning class in each year group.

  • Book Cover Design Contest for all year levels: Throughout World Book Week, during English lessons, students were invited to design book covers for their favorite books. Students chose the media for their book cover (print or digital). The English Department jury chose one winner from each class, prizes were awarded to winners

  • Story Writing Contest for year 4: Inspired by our author visit by Lena Ollmark, year 4 students had a "Spooky Story" writing contest in our Swedish classes. A judging jury chose one winner from each class.

  • Literary Quiz Walk for year 5: Highlighting story-writing tips and trivia from novels the year 5 students were reading in Swedish this year, the students went on a quiz walk around the playground. The classes were divided into teams, and the winning team from each class won a prize.

  • "Romeo and Juliet" Performance by year 6: Our year 6 English classes performed Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" for various year groups. The students worked so diligently with acting, directing, sound, and artistic stage setting. The talented students and their teacher got a special shout out message from Oliver Phelps, the actor who played George Weasley in the Harry Potter films!

  • "Big Reader" program by year 7: Some of our brightest (and most willing) year 7 students made special visits to our junior school classes to read aloud to the students. They read excerpts from their favorite books.

  • Class Quizzes for year 8 and 9: Students had literary-related Kahoot quizzes in Swedish classes. Prizes were awarded to winners in each class.

World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Each year on April 23, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the scope of books -- a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures. On this occasion, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a year to maintain, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations.
