Our new series shines a light on the diverse and vital roles that support our students' well-being and success. From behaviour specialists to caretakers, we delve into the diverse roles that contribute to a positive and supportive school environment. Next up is Laura Hull, a student care manager at IES Sundbyberg.
Describe your work and what your role entails.
Like many of us, I wear many hats in my role! My responsibilities include preventive work within student health, such as collaborating on the Plan Mot Kränkande Behandling, organizing monthly themes, and planning parent cafes. I also support students with social and behavioral concerns. However, the best part of my job is the connections I build with the students during breaks. No two days are the same, and I absolutely love the energy that it brings!
Why did you choose to start working at IES, and how long have you been
working here?
I started working at IES during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the airline I worked for partnered with IES through the Skill Shift Initiative. This initiative aimed to give airline staff the opportunity to work in schools during a period of reduced flight operations. During the induction, I was drawn to and inspired by the passion for education and pastoral support IES stood for. It felt like the perfect place to make a real impact, and I have been here since 2020. It has been an incredible journey ever since!
What would you say makes your school a great school?
The people! From students to staff, there is a real sense of community. It’s a place where learning is exciting, and everyone is encouraged to grow through great leadership, students and teachers alike.

What is the best thing about your job?
The students! They keep things interesting, ask the best (and sometimes the most impossible) questions, and remind me every day why I love what I do. The best part is when I hear from parents or students that they are thriving socially and academically; it’s incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I’ve played a part in their journey and helped create a positive experience for them and their families makes this job truly special.
What activity during the school year do you enjoy the most? Why?
I love themed months and dress-up days, whether it’s Book Day, International Women’s Day, or Rock Your Socks Day. These events bring everyone together and create a wonderful sense of community. It’s amazing to see the students’ creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence shine in different ways, especially during Halloween. Plus, it’s always fun to see students and staff step out of their usual routines and embrace the spirit of the day!
What are you most proud of when you think about your school?
The growth within student care initiatives, particularly in preventative work and our collaboration with external services, has been truly impactful. By supporting students early and working together to provide the right tools and guidance, we can make a real difference in their well-being and success. Watching students gain confidence, overcome challenges, and achieve things they never thought possible is incredibly rewarding. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that genuinely prioritizes student well-being.
