Year 6A at Internationella Engelska Skolan Lund has been named one of ten finalists in the "Experts of Tomorrow Innovation Race". With their entry "Move 2 Freedom", the students aim to tackle both climate change and health issues by generating electricity from human movement.
This year’s competition theme focuses on sustainable travel, which inspired the class to develop generators for shoe soles that charge batteries while walking, running, or cycling. The idea was sparked during social studies lessons when the students discussed the link between emissions and sedentary lifestyles.
"We learned that transport emissions damage the environment and that many people don't move enough, which can negatively impact health. So we thought: can we solve both problems at the same time?" explains student Linnea.
The project has required a great deal of commitment even after school hours, with the group building prototypes and refining their presentation to demonstrate how the technology could be used by everyone from schoolchildren to researchers in the wilderness.
Community through innovation
Their SO teacher, Hanna Gustafsson, emphasises that the project has fostered a strong sense of drive and cohesion in the classroom by allowing the students to take ownership of their visions. She describes her role as primarily challenging their reasoning, while the students themselves have spearheaded the process.
"It’s inspiring to see how their commitment stems from a genuine interest and a desire to make a difference. It is precisely this drive and collaboration that make these types of projects and competitions so valuable."
The students are thrilled to have reached the final. Being nominated is a major achievement in itself and proof of the high standard of their work. They will find out how far their idea takes them when the final is decided and broadcast on 13 March. Regardless of the result, they are proud of the journey, the lessons learned, and the teamwork that brought them here.
"We feel we have a strong innovation that we truly believe in," says student Erland. "We’ve put in a lot of time and effort, and we’re proud of what we’ve created together. We feel our idea could go far."
