Internationella Engelska Skolan comments on government proposal for increased safety
The Swedish government decided on Thursday 20 March to refer legislation around increased safety in school to the Council on Legislation (Lagrådet) and to provide additional funding. Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) has responded to the proposal.
Legislation referred to Lagrådet includes requirements that all schools must have a preparedness plan and ongoing preparedness work, and that no unauthorised persons shall have access to the school's premises while activities are in progress, that principals will be obliged to report crimes in connection with school activities, and that schools will be able to search bags and other items.
Linda Öholm, head of public affairs, said: "For many years, we at Internationella Engelska Skolan have worked very actively to create a safe and secure school, and many of our schools already have closed doors and a reception where you have to report your arrival.
"It is important that the work and the intentions are now followed by full permanent funding. The safety of Swedish schools should not be defined by levels of ambition between school operators, but by the fact that laws and regulations can be complied with."
