Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm to close in 2026

Internationella Engelska Skolan has decided to close Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm (IEGS), which means that all teaching will cease at the end of the school year in June 2026. The first step is to close the admission of new students for the 2025-2026 school year.

IEGS will not admit new students for the start of the fall term 2025 and those who have already applied for an upper secondary school program at IEGS need to make a new choice before February 17, which is the last day to apply for an upper secondary school in Stockholm. The school's current 391 students in grades two and three will be able to complete their entire education at IEGS, while 159 students who are in grade one this academic year will need to change schools no later than the start of the semester in August 2026.

Linda Öholm, head of public affairs at Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES), said: “This is sad news and our main focus now is to secure the students' right to complete their education in the best way, either with us or with other school operators. We will offer our students support in this process and have initiated dialogue with other operators.”

IEGS is the only upper secondary school within IES, which operates 47 compulsory schools. The upper secondary school has not been financially viable for many years, and in connection with the lease agreement expiring in 2026, a decision has been made to begin the school's closure.

Ms Öholm said: “This is the most responsible thing to do under the current circumstances. Although the school has provided high-quality education for 25 years, the number of applicants has gradually decreased in recent years, which is why we are closing the school. The closure will take place in a structured manner, with a focus on what is best for our students and staff.”
