IES welcomes white paper on new curriculum
Proposals for new curriculum include reinforcement around reading and writing, a strengthened teacher role, emphasis on knowledge and skills, and more.
The Curriculum White Paper was submitted to the government by investigator Thomas Persson today, 26 February. Among the proposals in the curriculum review are an emphasis on basic knowledge and skills, reinforcement of reading and writing, a strengthened teacher role, reduced demands for individualisation and adaptation, frameworks for the implementation of teaching and teaching strategies.
The purpose, according to the white paper, is to create more concrete syllabi. There will be clearer frameworks for teaching based on scientific evidence and proven experience, with stronger support for teachers, fewer local decisions and discussions. Teachers will also determine and lead teaching.
Annakarin Johansson Sandman, head of academics at Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES), said: "We welcome the change that the white paper calls for; it is a step in the right direction. Many of the proposals are what we at IES have long advocated, namely a school where students understand the purpose of teaching, which is calm but inspiring, and where the teacher is the leader in the classroom.
"Research also shows that high academic expectations lead to students who actually succeed in school. To be able to conduct developed reasoning requires factual knowledge, which the new curriculum white paper emphasises, and we are grateful for that."
