IES Täby named a role model for school chess following impressive achievements
Internationella Engelska Skolan Täby has received recognition from the Swedish Chess Federation, which has officially designated the school as a role model for chess in schools. The diploma celebrates the school's dedicated staff, its pedagogical focus, and an impressive string of tournament victories.

Mr Håkan Östling, General Secretary of the Swedish Chess Federation, and Mr Karl Dingertz, Chairperson of the Stockholm Chess Federation, visited the school to present the prestigious diploma, which places IES Täby among an exclusive group of chess schools in the country. Through well-managed school chess clubs, the school has established a solid foundation for students across both Junior and Senior School, with the award highlighting IES Täby as an important ambassador for chess in education.
"We are immensely proud of this award. It is fantastic validation of the dedication shown by both our students and staff. Our success at the chessboard is entirely down to continuity and community spirit, and we look forward to continuing to build on this work," says Mr Johan Öhman, principal at IES Täby.
A winning chess culture
The initiative has yielded impressive results on the chessboard, where IES Täby has secured top finishes in both the Swedish School Team Championship and the IES National Chess Championship. The pinnacle came in 2026, when the Senior School took home the gold medal to become Swedish champions in Yes2Chess.
The Swedish Chess Federation's official citation for the diploma reads: "In recent years, a strong chess culture has been established at IES Täby. Committed staff and continuity, combined with a clear focus on the pedagogical value of chess, have created a broad, deep, and successful chess program at the school."
