IES students head to Stockholm for national science showdown

It has been an exhilarating journey as many of our schools dived headfirst into this year’s Teknikåttan competition. After a series of nail-biting regional heats across the country, two of our schools – IES Falun and IES Kungsbacka – have fought off stiff competition to secure their places in the national final.

The journey so far has been no small feat. Nearly 19,000 students from all over Sweden took part in the initial stages, engaging with complex challenges that blend technology, mathematics, and natural sciences. The regional finals brought together young minds to compete for a spot in Stockholm, where our finalists will represent their schools on 21st May.

Throughout the day, students navigated various tasks within technology and science. Their challenges included building bridges, answering fact-based questions, and attempting to crack the code to a locked safe. Much like the engineering profession itself, the competition demanded a combination of teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.

One of the competitors from IES Falun, Alfa Dahlström, described the moment she realised they had won the regionals in their area:

"The room just exploded when it happened. It took me a second to process what was going on, but I started screaming anyway – mostly just reacting to the two people sitting next to me doing it. Then I saw the score and realised why they were shouting, as we'd surged into first place."

Several other IES schools also delivered impressive performances in the regionals: for example, IES Hässelholm, IES Skellefteå, IES Landskrona, and IES Karlstad.
