IES Skellefteå advances to Scandinavian finals in FIRST® LEGO® League

A team of dedicated year 7–9 students from IES Skellefteå achieved an outstanding victory in the regional FIRST® LEGO® League 2025 competition on November 8, earning them a coveted spot in the Scandinavian finals.

The competition consists of four key areas: robot matches, technical design, an innovation project, and demonstrating the League’s core values. The team spent eight weeks combining programming, engineering design, and research to tackle this year’s archaeology-themed challenge. Using Lego Spike technology, they programmed a robot to complete 15 complex missions within a strict two-and-a-half-minute time limit.

In addition to their robot performance, the students prepared a detailed engineering and programming report, which they presented to a panel of professional engineers. They also completed an innovation project exploring current issues in archaeology. Their research focused on how climate change impacts archaeological sites and the challenges faced by archaeologists working in extreme conditions.

The students' hard work resulted in a spectacular haul of three awards: Best Technical Design and Presentation, Second Place in Robot Matches, and the Overall First Place Winner. This extraordinary achievement secures the team’s advancement to the Scandinavian finals, which will be held on November 28-29 in Stavanger, Norway.

“Everyone at IES Skellefteå is incredibly proud of our students, who have demonstrated remarkable teamwork, creativity, and perseverance,” said Max O'Connor Clarke, Science, Maths & French Teacher at IES Skellefteå.
