Internationella Engelska Skolan has once again demonstrated a robust alignment between the final grades awarded to year 9 students and their results on the national tests in Swedish, Mathematics, English, and Swedish as a second language.
Use figures that illustrate the strong correlation between national exams and final grades, highlighting the percentage of students achieving an equal final grade compared to their national test result. The higher the figure for 'equal,' the greater the alignment.
The latest results published by the Swedish National Education Agency (Skolverket) show that IES continues to surpass the national average for consistency, underscoring the effectiveness of the schools’ ongoing quality assurance efforts. Every year, the grading within each school is evaluated, compared and analysed using IES’ statistics database. Any deviations in grades compared to the results in the national tests, as well as any deviations compared to the IES average and municipal and national averages, are examined to ensure that the teachers grade correctly.
Annakarin Johansson Sandman, Head of Academics at IES, highlighted the significance of the sustained trend:
“Our long-term, focused commitment to assessment quality is clearly reflected in these results. Furthermore, our students consistently perform above average on national tests. IES students' top grades (A-C) on the national tests are 12% better in Swedish, 15% better in Mathematics, and 16% better in English than the country as a whole. These results are proof of our successful systematic quality work that is carried out in our schools every day.”
“The strong correlation indicates a high degree of grade integrity, meaning our teachers are accurately assessing student knowledge without systematic over- or under-grading. This accuracy is paramount to ensuring fair grades for every student.”
Core principles in practice
The results directly support IES’s ethos of high academic expectations. Annakarin Johansson Sandman emphasises that this is central to building trust within the education sector.
“We are convinced that every child can achieve success irrespective of their background. When the final grades closely mirror national test performance, it validates the hard work of both students and teachers, confirming that the high expectations we set are both challenging and achievable.”
