From December 1st to 7th, the radio and TV programme Musikhjälpen is broadcast live from Stora Torget in Karlstad. Naturally, IES Karlstad wanted to participate wholeheartedly in this important fundraising initiative.
Aye Alrokaby and Alrik Wikström, students at IES Karlstad.
IES Karlstad’s contribution is a physical one: throughout the Musikhjälpen week, a dedicated team of students and staff are taking turns cycling on exercise bikes. It's safe to say that the bikes, that originally were purchased to act as a break activity and brain break for students within the health initiative #movewithIES, became a part of something even bigger.
The goal is to cycle as many kilometres as possible while raising money for this year’s theme: Every child has the right to go to school. Education is a human right, yet access to schooling is far from guaranteed for the millions of children and young people living in crises such as war, poverty and natural disasters.
The initiative is a fantastic way to combine movement, community spirit, and charity.
“Every pedal stroke counts,” says Helen Järpegård, Junior Club and Activity Leader at IES Karlstad. “When we cycle, we do it not only for our own health and joy, but because all children have the right to access education. Together, we demonstrate that small actions taken by many can create real change. We hope that our commitment will inspire others to contribute – so that even more children can access education and a brighter future.”
“The theme this year reminds us of something that is often taken for granted,” says student Aye Alrokaby, who took part in the cycling session on Stora Torget on Wednesday. “In Sweden, we have free access to education, but for many children around the world, it is far from guaranteed. By caring, spreading awareness, and participating in initiatives like Musikhjälpen, we show that we do not accept violations of children’s basic rights. Getting involved also matters for us – it helps us develop empathy, understand the world better, and realise that we can make a difference, even at a young age.”
