IES calls for more thorough background checks in Altinget

IES calls for three key changes: checks that include a broader range of crimes, frequent instead of one-time checks, and background screening for students entering teacher training programmes. IES states these measures are essential to create a truly safe learning, and working, environment.

Johannes Martin, Security and Safety Director, and Linda Öholm, Head of Public Affairs, have written a debate article published in Altinget:

We want more controls to stop gang recruitment

At a time when societal developments place greater demands on schools to protect their students, we as employers must have effective tools to guarantee a safe working environment for everyone in the school. The government needs to ensure that schools are equipped with these tools.

The government's memorandum on expanded background checks is a welcome start for creating a safer school environment. However, the proposal, which is now out for consultation, would be like handing in an exam with only the first question answered. Crucial questions about how we will protect our 31,000 students and 3,500 staff from recruitment into criminal networks, radicalisation, and other undue influence remain unanswered. A safe school is the foundation upon which all learning rests, and stopping at this point would result in a failing grade.

The school's main mission is, and must remain, education. These measures must not shift responsibility for law enforcement from the state's legal authorities to the schools. Our staff are not the police. However, to be able to protect our students, a much more comprehensive toolbox is needed. Therefore, Internationella Engelska Skolan would like to see:

  • Broader background checks: Schools need checks that include more types of crimes, such as breach of trust, embezzlement, and fraud. A complete picture is essential for assessing a person's suitability in an environment where children are present.

  • Annual checks: A one-off check creates an illusion of security. Since an employee can commit crimes during their employment, annual checks are necessary, and we would advocate for even more frequent checks.

  • Expanded checks for students: By extending criminal record checks before admission to teacher training programmes, students who are found to be unsuitable for the teaching profession can be removed.

To provide high-quality education, we must have a safe environment. Effective background checks are needed to fulfill our responsibility to our students and staff — to make school the secure place it should be.
