What do you want to do with your life? What should you study? These are the questions that study and careers advisors help students answer. The Swedish Association of Independent Schools (Friskolornas Riksförbund) spoke with Volkan Serengil, who works with students at Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) Liljeholmen to help them achieve their dreams.
IES Liljeholmen’s study and careers counsellor Volkan Serengil works to guide the school's students in their studies and future careers, and to help students find the right path.
Much of his work involves individual conversations with students to help them discover their passions and aspirations for the future. He said: "Many students have a narrow-minded approach, thinking that they should choose the science, economics, or social science stream in high school. It's an important part of my job to sometimes challenge these structures and get them to think outside the box. Many can only name 3-4 of the 18 national high school programs we have in Sweden."
IES Liljeholmen has a diverse student body, with many coming from socioeconomically deprived areas around Stockholm, such as Järvafältet, Skärholmen, and Botkyrka. Volkan Serengil believes it's crucial to support students from these marginalised communities who may not have academic aspirations.
"We need to be able to break patterns, and sometimes students come to us themselves and say they need help with that. It could be about getting help with homework to achieve higher grades, or a more comprehensive plan of action where they understand the importance of high school and further studies. We create the conditions for these students to dream about their future."
