“It is not the students who necessarily have the highest grades that we are looking for, but those who have achieved excellent academic results based on their own conditions and the strong motivation to achieve their goals”, said Magnus Carlsson, father of Ellinor and initiator of the scholarship in Memory of Ellinor Carlsson, the scholarship fund that makes the Grit Award possible.

“The students have been admirable in how they keep going. They have been committed to their studies and school, and they have kept going to make sure that this part of their journey is completed well”, said Magnus Carlsson.

The scholarship is 15 000 kronor for the high school stipend and 10 000 kronor for the compulsory school stipends.

These are two of the laureates this year and part of the motivations:

Filip Larsson, IES Karlstad
“In the spirit of Ellinor’s hard work and dedication to her academics amidst her own health struggles, we believe Filip is a deserving candidate for this award with similar ambition through hardship.”

Emilia Challma, IES Liljeholmen
“Emilia has shown tremendous strength in navigating through the personal loss of a close family member, demonstrating maturity and grace beyond her years. Despite the challenges she has faced, Emilia remains resilient and determined to pursue her goals. Her commitment to her education is commendable and serves as an inspiration to her peers and educators alike."

The scholarship fund in memory of Ellinor Carlsson

The scholarship fund in memory of Ellinor Carlsson awards scholarships each year, currently two at the high school of 15,000 each and three at the primary schools at 10,000 each, to students in Internationella Engelska Skolan. The scholarships go to students who show an exceptional ability and willingness to overcome obstacles and challenges and who live by Ellinor's motto "never give up". In May 2015 when she was 18 years old and a student at the gymnasium of Internationella Engelska Skolan and was about to write her final exams, she suddenly became ill in cancer. She wrote her remaining exams in the IBDP (The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme), from the hospital bed. And shortly before she died in 2015, she got the fund as a last gift from her father.

“It should go to students who have shown extraordinary will and don’t give up - students like me”. That was her will when being in such a bad condition the last weeks.

Understanding Ellinors’s words of motivation and encouragement to never give up, this year’s winners have maintained focus and commitment to their studies, in spite of the obstacles and challenges that are a part of their journey.
