What's been happening lately at IES Östersund?

A compilation of what activities our different year groups and Fritids has been up to the past few months.

Our different classes have been up to quite a lot the past few months!

Year 5 got to try their hands at building and coding with Ms Gukhool! Each lesson they had a different assignment, but for each one they had to build a base (a kind of mini-robot) with lego and then program it to do something (for example to drive forward but stop before hitting the wall). Valuable skills to have and a fun break from staring down into textbooks!

Year 4 also got to do some building, but they built houses out of cardboard that they then installed some electricity in. Each group was given a paper with information about an old house they were to renovate and improve, foremost by implementing electricity run by a renewable energy source such as wind or water. All fictional of course, but at the end of the project they had a presentation where they could also explain their process and thoughts. A fun project where they implemented both art and science!

Year 3 has been up to a lot of fun. They've raised butterflies from caterpillars to full-fledged butterflies, studying how they grow, what they look like and what they eat. The grand finale was when it was time to let the butterflies free; they walked to a nearby field and everyone got to wave goodbye as the butterflies flew away.

Aside from learning about butterflies they've also been learning about the road of milk - from production to getting on our tables. As a part of that, year 3 got to go visit Länsmansgårdens Lantbruk, a dairy farm in Brunflo! There they got to see the machines they use (and try sitting in one of their tractors) and of course they also got to see and pet the cows and calves. A big thank you to Länsmansgården for hosting our year 3's and taking such good care of them!

During Fritids Ms Byström also arranged for year 3 to do some baking on a few separate occasions. They've baked both bread, chokladbollar and apple pie! Seeing the interest year 3 has had in this (some even staying later than planned to be a a part of it) has been wonderful, and the skills they get to use are also incredibly useful in everyday life (both the baking itself but also math for example). Thank you to Ms Byström for organizing it!

And this is still just a fraction of all the fun things our different years have done recently. If you want to see more pictures head over to our social medias!
