Year Nine Detectives Crack the Code in English Class

Students in year nine put their critical thinking and language skills to the test in an interactive murder mystery challenge. Guided by their teacher, Ms Glaspie, the students collaborated in English to solve a complex puzzle, enjoying a few well-earned snacks along the way.

At Internationella Engelska Skolan, we constantly look for innovative ways to challenge our students and bring learning to life. Recently, Ms Glaspie’s year nine English class transformed into a crime scene investigation headquarters for a unique, out-of-the-box learning experience.

The students took on the roles of detectives, working closely in teams to piece together clues, analyze evidence, and discuss hypothesis —all entirely in English. This immersive activity required students to use their language skills in a highly practical, fast-paced environment, shifting focus from traditional textbook exercises to dynamic problem-solving.

To achieve high academic expectations, we know that students must find joy and motivation in the learning process. This detective challenge did just that, pushing students to exercise deep critical thinking, use advanced vocabulary, and collaborate effectively under pressure. To keep the energy high during their intense investigations, Ms Glaspie even treated the class to some well-deserved snacks.

Unusual and creative activities like this are a vital part of our school culture, proving that high-quality, teacher-led education can be both rigorous and deeply engaging. By stepping outside the box, our year nine students demonstrated excellent teamwork and proved they have the linguistic grit to solve any mystery put before them.
