This week, a renowned education expert visits Internationella Engelska Skolan to deepen our expertise in the science of learning and professional coaching.
Tom Sherrington, a leading figure in British education with over thirty years of experience as both a teacher and headteacher, returns to our organisation this week. Tom is a familiar face within IES, and his regular workshops have become a cornerstone of our professional development programme. This visit reflects our ongoing dedication to "upskilling" our staff, ensuring our educators remain at the forefront of modern teaching practices.
“I love being here in Sweden with the teachers from across IES”, said Tom Sherrington. “They have so much enthusiasm for professional learning and a deep commitment to supporting all students from such diverse backgrounds to deepen their understanding and build their confidence. I always get such a warm welcome – and so much fika!”
Mr Sherrington utilises "Rosenshine’s Principles," which are essentially a set of evidence-based gold standards for effective teaching. Rather than relying on complicated theories, these principles focus on practical actions that help students learn more efficiently. This includes things like breaking new information into small, manageable steps, checking for understanding frequently, and ensuring students have ample time to practise what they have learnt. It is a transition from the "guesswork" of teaching to a proven, research-based blueprint for success.
To make these scientific principles easy to apply in a busy classroom, Tom co-created the "WalkThrus" concept. Think of these as clear, visual "how-to" guides that provide teachers with a step-by-step toolkit for various classroom techniques. During his visit, Tom will lead workshops focusing on these practical methods and, crucially, how our staff can coach one another to become even better educators. This peer-to-peer coaching is a vital part of our strategy; it turns our schools into vibrant hubs of shared expertise where teachers support each other’s growth.
“The beauty of the WalkThrus concept lies in its clarity”, said Annakarin Johansson Sandman, head of academics at IES. “Working with Tom Sherrington allows IES to unify our academic leadership and teaching staff under a single goal: delivering world-class education through deliberate, expert practice. His recent visits has been a masterclass in pedagogical precision, and we are happy to have him here again!”
We believe that by empowering our staff with these world-leading techniques, we are not just improving our teaching – we are ensuring that our schools continue to deliver an outstanding educational experience for all.
