IES paves the way with Sweden’s first cricket tournament for schools

There was joy, excitement, and lots of grit when the very first Anchor Sports x IES Super 6 Cricket Cup took place recently. Over 100 students from six different IES schools gathered in Tumba to compete for medals in what is Sweden's first organised school cricket tournament.

The participating schools – IES Årsta, IES Solna, IES Liljeholmen, IES Sundbyberg, IES Kista and IES Bromma – offered impressive play and fantastic sportsmanship. The tournament was played in a fast and intense format that kept the audience on edge until the very last ball.

The tournament was made possible through the strong commitment of Maximilian Connors (IES Årsta) and his former colleague Neal Powell, who now works at IES Liljeholmen. Together, they founded the IES Årsta Cricket Club in 2022 to give students a meaningful after-school activity.

"Seeing how what we started as a small club in Årsta has grown into this major event is absolutely incredible," says Maximilian Connors. "Our goal has always been to build leadership and respect through the sport. Seeing six schools meet here today proves that the sport of cricket has a bright future within the IES family."

Gold to Årsta and Bromma

After a day filled with strategic moves and physical performances, it was clear who became historic champions:

  • Senior class: IES Årsta took home the gold after a nail-biting final against IES Bromma.

  • Junior class: IES Bromma showed great endurance and won the gold medal match against IES Liljeholmen.

The collaboration with Anchor Sports has been crucial in realising the tournament. By offering a professional indoor facility and expertise, they have given the students an authentic cricket experience.

Cricket, with its international character and focus on team spirit, fits perfectly into IES's profile.

“Through our health initiative, #movewithIES, we strive to make different types of sports accessible to everyone. Seeing the students represent their schools in this tournament is a perfect example of how movement builds both physical health and a strong sense of community and pride,” says Andjela Dimitrijevic, Health Initiative Manager at IES.

Big congratulations to all participating teams and thanks to the organisers, teachers and students who made this day unforgettable!
