Board of Directors
Internationella Engelska Skolan, founded in 1993, operates in the form of a shareholder company. The founder, Ms. Barbara Bergstrom, was the sole owner until September 2012, when she entered into a partnership with the renowned global growth investment firm TA Associates, adding strength to expand internationally.
Major investors in TA are leading American universities, pension funds (including those for teachers) and non-profit foundations for science and similar purposes. TA has previous experience in the education sector, mostly at the college level. Its activities in Scandinavia are handled by staff in its London, UK office.

Chairman - Mr Per Båtelson
Mr Båtelson was elected as chairman of the board for Internationella Engelska Skolan in 2016. He is also chairman of the board for IVBAR, Polybiocept and Humana and a board member for Swedcare, Forte and KRY, as well as Oriola and MedGroup in Finland. Previously Mr Båtelson was a board member and cofounder of Global Health Partner and managing director of Capio. He has extensive experience in the international pulp and paper industry as well as in chemical and biotechnology companies. He has a Master of Science degree in Technical Physics from Chalmers University of Technology.
Vice Chairman - Ms Barbara Bergström
In 1993 Ms Barbara Bergstrom, a science teacher from the USA, founded Internationella Engelska Skolan. The school she started was one of the first to take advantage of new laws permitting and encouraging student choice in education. Today almost 20,000 students are taught in our 29 schools around Sweden. Barbara Bergstrom was also the principal of the IES mother school until 2003, when she moved over to the position of working chairman, leading the expansion of Internationella Engelska Skolan. Her successful entrepreneurship has been given wide recognition. Ms. Bergstrom was selected as "Årets företagare i Sverige 2009" (Företagarna) and the winner of Female entrepreneur of the year in Sweden 2013 (EY).
Mr Birker Bahnsen
A managing director at TA Associates’ London office, Mr Bahnsen has a MEng in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Behavioral and Cognitive Science from the University of Oxford. He has more than ten years of private equity experience and is also a board member of Amann Girrbach, MIS Implants Technologies and PhysIOL.
Ms Cecilia Marlow
Cecilia Marlow, born 1960, has an MBA from Stockholm School of Economics. Her work experience includes some ten years in accounting and CFO roles, and some twenty years as CEO mainly in retail (including NK, Polarn O.Pyret, Kronans Apotek). Since 2012 she has been a professional board member. She is currently a board director for Clas Ohlson, Midsona, Fazer Group, MatHem, Kivra and Platzer.
The day to day operation is lead by the head office of Internationella Engelska Skolan, located in Täby, Stockholm.
The individual schools are led by their respective principals.
