Chess Finals Beckon For Fourth Graders

Students will be hoping for a check mate when they head to the national final of the Schackfyran competition.
Classes 4F from Internationella Engelska Skolan Gävle and 4F from Internationella Engelska Skolan Eskilstuna will both be going forward to the chess contest’s finals in Västerås in June.
To win their place in the national final the children had to compete against others from their län.

Her classmate Emelie Morani added “It’s fun to play and win.”
The chess finalists from Gävle were equally excited.
Talking about the competition so far, Tilde Fällgren said: ”It was really interesting because I like playing chess very much but I hadn’t played against people I did not know before.”
Carl Löfqvist puts their success down to practice making perfect. He said: ”As soon as we heard about the tournament three months ago we started playing chess every day for 20 minutes before our first lesson started.”
Oliver Melander added: ”We didn’t expect to win and just tried our best on the day.”
Schackfyran is a nationwide contest for children in the fourth grade. It is known as the largest chess contest in the world.
The final will be held in the ABB arena in Västerås on Saturday, June 2.
